Introduction: Yes, I know I have another story (or two *blush*) going that are not finished yet, and yes I have made a personal promise to at least finish "Ignis Fatuus" before writing this piece. But when inspiration strikes this hard you have to do *something* to cement your ideas.
Recently I saw the movie "Inception." The last time I saw a Christopher Nolan film ("The Dark Knight") I wrote what is commonly considered to be my best short story, "Tell Me You Love Me." I got a similar burst of inspiration when seeing this film, so much so that I started taking notes in my purse notebook during the movie.
Instead of starting writing the story, which I knew would derail my other, I decided to design the main characters and share them with you. I'm still deciding a few things, but I can tell you the bit about them that I have already figured out.
Enjoy
Riley: The world knows her as a young leading actress on a popular teen drama, but in reality she leads a small group of women specializing in saving people before they're threatened. Through the direction of Elliot (see below), Riley leads her team into the VR worlds and, more importantly, into the mind and dreams of the attackers (this is far enough in the future that nearly everyone is at least jacked in to the net) and stop an attack before it happens.
Riley is soft spoken, brilliant and intense, despite the bubbly, girly and slightly idiotic persona she is forced to adopt as an actress. She is private and rarely speaks of her past.
Luke: Luke is nearly completely threaded and makes a living doing all sorts of jobs (legal and otherwise) in VR. She has the ability to memorize the mannerisms of people in RL and completely transform herself in VR into that person. She is brash and wild, but extremely loyal and strong. She keeps most facts about herself secret.
Elliot: A once famous model, Elliot was severely injured during an attack on one of her runway shows and she ended up in a coma. Under the care of her twin sister, Shane (see below) Elliot began showing signs of brain activity and it was discovered that, while she is never seen online, she has been building elaborate worlds in VR. She is the team's link to the divine, guiding them into the minds of the people they have to influence, building VR worlds and dreamscapes to help their missions succeed.
Billie: A stripper by profession, Billie could be considered a VR addict in her down time. She is a strong fighter in VR and strongly prefers dreams and VR to the real world, to the point that she doesn't always know which is reality. When not stripping, she is private and calm. Luke is openly in love with her, but Billie spurns all advances.
Aaron: The resident tech genius. Aaron was a once-famous actress who, though she is still popular, has taken the backseat to younger stars like Riley (which she doesn't mind.) She became a mentor of sorts to Riley on the set of the teen drama (where Aaron plays a teacher.) Outspoken and unashamed, Aaron is Riley's strength and, in many ways, a sort of mother figure.
Shane: Elliot's twin sister. Elliot is a licensed doctor who left her private practice to care for her sister. She is completely devoted and sees Elliot's activity in VR as a sign that she might one day awaken. She does not hide the fact that if she could awaken Elliot, even at the expense of Elliot's visions, she would.
