Discuss Celestial Weapons and Armor here. Or start your own concise topic in the Celestials section.

A question was posed to me recently. Celestial marbles. What are they? Glass? Precious stones? Not a 3D material at all but rather energy and 4D matter that manifests as a 3D object that resembles a 3D marble? What can marbles be? What can't they be? How big or small?
Jump right in, Celestials

I have always assume that Celestial marbles are actual three dimensional marbles because Celestials find that these objects allow them to easily focus their minds and encase the attack or defense power within a carrying object. This object could be anything organic. Glass (like is a marble), gemstones, crystals and other crushable objects. I think the holding object needs to be round and I think that children's cat's eye marbles are the easiest to charge for some reason.
Just my opinion. Glad to share.

Only when I went back to the original story about Pholus did I realize that maybe Pholus was first to use glass children's marbles to host power. The idea of Celestials charging stones before this time is very appealing; Celestials crushing *stone* to release a fractal serpent is a powerful image.
Maybe the composition must be mineral? As opposed to organic matter (wood, flora)?

So orb meaning anything round and clear? Plastic? How clear? Why clear?
I imagine the marbles the size of dimes or pennies.Easy to crush if you're a Celestial.

This post has been modified from the original because the nature of the Marbles has changed.
They are round and must be made of an organic material. A stone would be fine, as long as it was a generally round shape.
The Pholus story referred to her is from "Immortal Waking: Pholus" in the Player's Handbook.
Cris
Launa had suggested that the marbles might mimic the Celestial's Ornate Form colors.

Oh wow! That's an amazing connection (Ornate Form/marbles). I love the clear thing in terms of this and being able to tell them apart. Hm. Beautiful imagery there, btw.
So... *any* round mineral-based (well, glass, stone, gems, etc) *can* be charged but the best vessels are relatively clear -- the more orb-like the better.
Sound good everyone? This is so nice an open for possibilities!

The Pholus story in Immortal Waking is set in Prime Time. I always imagined that he thought up using cat's eyes marbles when his son was 7 or 8 years old. That would place their invention (well, application) right about when Mom's "Immortal Waking" is set (which is when Pholus' son is 8 ).

Ah, okay. So before then I suppose stones were mostly used?
What about pearls and opals and other stones/minerals that are not necessarily clear, but would carry color well? I was thinking of Jo's necklace, EJ.

Yes, opals and pearls *anything* that looks like a swirling orb of mysterious color and light. Celestials are, after all, quite fond of their fine aesthetics

This, then, would be counter to the Terrapyre prayer-bead idea. I like the idea of Celestials using physical stones of whatever type, and Terrapyres using something a little more specific. (Such as prayer beads, tattoos...whatever we decide on) It kind of allows for personal creativity. Perhaps one person's marbles might be pearls, because they identify personally with the characteristics associated with pearls. Another person - brash, impulsive for a Celestial, quick to judge, would use perhaps Alexandrite, which is known to change color in different environments. Etc. etc., just a couple ideas that roll off my head. xD

Beautiful idea, Abbie! Yes, this is exactly how to see this. The potential is huge, yes? I want to empower the writers, to allow them to make their characters stand out in all aspects while still fitting into the universe in a cohesive way. Like for Pholus... I think he chose marbles because of his son, who plays marbles, you know? Maybe someone could post characteristics of some stones here so people to explore this idea?

I may be out of my depth here and if I am just say so...
With Celestials being from a fourth dimension and 4D beings, the concept of size becomes very relative. Couldn't an orb be anything from the glass sphere idea as in Labyrinth all the way to planets full of living energy like with Men in Black, therefore depending on how 'morale' a particular Celestial is could play a lot into what they use for orbs. Seeing Eris crush a planet in his/her hands to release some cataclysmic power is incredibly visceral and horrifying.

Matt, I certainly agree with you. And, sadly, that seems like something Eris would do... though only if he felt the planet had somehow crossed that line between black and gold (black/white). That Eris... always thinks of himself and judge and jury
I think the specific we were trying to nail down here is how big are the Celestial marbles when they are presented on Earth (in a 3D environment). But what you're saying is absolutely right. If a Celestial can (and certainly many have) crush a marble and release a massive whirling vortex attack... well... then that there marble is certainly, in truth, much, much bigger than a dime. These marbles are simply condensed points that may contain enormous force/mass/etc.
Oh Matt... *shudder*... I'm still kinda trippin' over the Eris crushing a planet thing.
*shudder*

I recently caught Jen online and she mentioned the use of small spheres (the size of a caper) as marbles. Specifically she was speaking of the orbs being set as stud earrings in the "Immortal Waking: Jared" story which is being created as a comic book.

That is much smaller than I'd thought possible. Good information. Glad someone thought of it for the Jared story.
